The NISE Standard Homestay is an English Language instruction, activity centered, academic homestay program lasting 2 to 4 weeks.

It is designed for high school students ages 15-18 and contains the following elements:

  • West coast location
  • Single placement homestay with American family
  • 12 hours of class per week; traditional classes 4 mornings per week from 8:30-12 noon
  • 2 teaching staff for groups of 16 and over (1 teacher 15 or fewer students)
  • Emphasis on conversational and idiomatic English: hearing and speaking
  • Academic center and playing field

Host families will be invited to participate in many of the activities including:

  • Welcome and goodbye parties.
  • 1 full-day excursion per week, which, may include the following for our Portland & SW Washington groups:
    1. Oregon Coast
    2. Columbia Gorge and Multnomah Falls
    3. Silver Creek Falls
    4. Mount Hood
    5. Mt. St. Helens volcano

 

There are three half-day activities per week, which, may include:

  • Walking tour of the neighborhood and local supermarket
  • Tour of a shopping mall
  • Museum
  • Miniature Golf
  • Bowling
  • Roller Skating
  • Zoo
  • Tour of a police station or fire house
  • Restaurant tour
  • Winter programs include visits to American schools.
