NISE English Prep Institute is an excellent opportunity for students to improve English skills before entering an American high school.

Program Features:

  • Minimum of 16 students preparing to spend an academic year in the U.S.

  • 5 to 8-week program of study and fun activities

  • Homestays - single placement in carefully selected homes 

  • 20 hours each week of classroom study for 5 to 8 weeks

  • Conversation partners and/or laboratory opportunity

  • Two trained English language teachers

  • Books and other classroom materials

  • SLEP TEST or TOEFL: preparation and testing

  • Academic Center located in downtown Portland with local access to many amenities

  • Metro area bus pass (good on buses and light rail)

  • Supervised all-day field trips may include:

    • Downtown Portland and "Old Town"
    • Oregon Coast
    • Columbia Gorge-Multnomah Falls
    • Mt. St. Helens Volcano or Silver Creek Falls
    • Washington Park and Rose Gardens and swimming
    • Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and Lloyd Center
    • Tour of Portland colleges: Reed College, Lewis & Clark College, Portland State University, University of Portland
  • Welcome and farewell parties

Prerequisites:

  • A minimum SLEP score of 45
  • Enrollment in the Education Travel & Culture (ETC) Academic Semester/School Year Program. (Please see www.edutrav.org.)

Additional Notes:

  • Students are responsible for their own personal spending money; suggested amount is $250 per month.
